Curved clear glass balconies from Balcony Systems Ltd make a distinctive architectural statement on luxury apartments at The Picture House, a Grade 2 listed Art Deco former cinema at 7 Streatham High Road, London.

Opening in 1938 as The Regal, it was designed by the architect William R Glen to incorporate Art Deco lines and a spacious, light foyer. Glass was chosen for the balconies, division screens and internal balustrading to complement the unique character and contemporary appearance of the building.

Its striking Grade 2 listed façade, fronting onto Streatham High Road, has been fully retained, sympathetically blending the nostalgia of a bygone age with modern materials and construction techniques.

Balustrading specialists Balcony Systems Ltd worked closely with project architects Hart Associates to devise a cost-effective and elegant balustrading solution for The Picture House, developed by Merc Investments and Construction Ltd.

The use of curved clear glass for balconies on 47 of the 62 apartments creates a striking visual impact on two elevations and allows for unobstructed views to the outside for the occupants. Each balcony spans 7 metres across two apartments with a single central post supporting a full height glass division screen for privacy.

Replacing an original bespoke specification of faceted glass, posts and handrails, the Balcony system met the architect's requirements for an aesthetically-pleasing, yet more competitively-priced solution.

600 metres of glass balustrading in a cream powder-coated finish was used throughout the entire building. This included a glazed balustrade for a spiral staircase access to a fifth-floor penthouse terrace.

Unlike conventional structurally-glazed systems, the Balcony solution is unique in not requiring vertical or corner posts for up to 3.8 metres as the aluminium hand-railing provides all the required strength and support for safety. The system's versatility enables it to be incorporated at any stage of the project specification.

Commenting on the balcony specification requirements, project architect James Baskerville says: "By offering a curved glass, rather than faceted solution, Balcony gave us the stylish, neat appearance we required. Installation was also very straightforward as having only one fixing into the concrete upstand per balcony, this offered both time savings and less scope for error.

"As a balustrading solution, glass was the perfect choice as its clean and neutral appearance complements the contemporary design and exterior of the apartments. Unlike bars or railings which require re-painting, the glazed system has the added advantages of being low-maintenance and corrosion-resistant."

Balcony also supplied a tailored glazing solution for the stepped concrete parapet to maintain even flowing sightlines on balconies to the top floor penthouses, despite a 200mm height difference with a brick cavity wall. Internally, the use of Balcony's staircase balustrades echoes the external glazed theme. Within the development, there is also some affordable housing and commercial use includes a fitness centre.

Developers Unicoin Homes Group Plc opted for the cleaner lines of glass balustrading, as opposed to railings, to complement the buildings' modern external appearance.

The Renaissance Living development at Sienna Court in Oldham offers stylish and modern retirement accommodation, with a mix of 53 apartments, of these six two-bedroom penthouse apartments.

The complex is built to exacting high standards by contractor Wiggett Construction Ltd and makes extensive use of glass. Glass was specified to maximise residents' views; both internally overlooking a large communal lounge/bistro area and externally from Juliette balconies to a central Piazza within the complex.

According to Renaissance Living, the elegance and simplicity of Balcony's "Balconette" Juliette Balcony system provides the secure 1.1 metre high balustrade to satisfy Building Regulations, but without any 'visually intrusive' bars and "at very reasonable comparative cost."

The company adds: "Balcony's systems have enabled us to make our original vision a reality - particularly as they occupy such highly visible positions, making them a key factor in the overall appearance of the development."

Balcony also provided the technical advice and design criteria for curved balconies and curved sliding patio door access for two large penthouse apartments. Developer IE Developments Ltd selected Balcony's new 'Royal Chrome' aluminium handrail finish for the 88 metres of balustrading at The Point, which comprises 12 apartments, two penthouses and two townhouses on a prominent 1.25-acre site at the top of Aylestone Hill.

According to Managing Director Tim Evans, the elegance and simplicity of the Balcony system perfectly matches the ethos behind the project's specification to offer a practical, stylish and high quality living environment with minimal maintenance requirements.

Tim adds: "Recent changes to the Construction (Design & Management) Regulations 2007 put the onus on builders and designers to incorporate greater health and safety considerations into what they build.

"The Balcony system addresses the long-term practicalities and maintenance issues to ensure compliance with the regulations, providing peace of mind for all from the outset. This is a real plus, as no one wants to go back to a job if things go wrong!"

A clear glass balcony extension has transformed the way John and Julie Tunnicliffe use their 1960's 'upside-down' Winchester home. At over five metres wide and between two and three metres deep, the tapered balcony is another room large enough to host a dinner party for six in comfort - achieved for the cost of a small family car.

Preserving uninterrupted views over the countryside was of paramount importance. The Channel Island of Jersey has enthusiastically embraced the arrival of a low-maintenance glass balcony system that offers safety and security, while keeping clear views to the outside.

All aspects of an innovative curved glass solution from Balcony Systems Ltd have been used to enhance the unique appearance of a contemporary Art Deco-influenced property on the South Coast.

The system's ability to achieve smooth curved glass doors and windows perfectly met the challenging 'grand piano' double-curve design of the four-bedroomed luxury seafront home overlooking Langstone Harbour at Hayling Island.

Cleaning glass on the outside of balconies, curved doors and glass railings is always a problem. Despite the fact that glass looks like a smooth faced product it is actually very porous when viewed under a microscope. These pours get filled in with dirt, dust, oil and other deposits which will obscure the natural clarity of the glass. These will look like stains sometimes.

Spectacular sweeping curved glass balconies, supplied and installed by Balcony Systems, provided the bespoke balustrading solution for the multi-million pound Gloucestershire dream home of one of Britain's leading industrialists.

Spread over seven levels, the 2,800 sq. meter futuristic, high-tech property is a fabulous fusion of glass, stone and metal roofing incorporating several self-contained apartments, a swimming pool, winter garden and viewing tower.

The former dairy farm site, near Wotton-under-Edge, also contains a second smaller property reflecting Swinhay House's contemporary style and materials. Both buildings use more than 45 meters of Balcony's elegant balustrading system, which was specified to meet the projects' complex design and aesthetic requirements.

As the system relies on the handrail for the necessary strength, the glass balustrades require minimum vertical supports to provide uninterrupted views of Swinhay's formal gardens, parkland and countryside beyond. An exciting project, it presented some interesting challenges as Effi Wolff, Balcony's Managing Director, pointed out: "All the balconies were highly unusual shapes in combinations of convex and concave curves, slopes and cut out of stone work to follow the building's unique shapes and changing levels. Retired business owners Stephen, 73 and Jo Harwood, 68, installed the balustrade last summer at their Fishbourne home and were selected from hundreds of entries featuring glass Juliette and external balconies to win an iPad.

Making the presentation on their balcony, Balcony Systems General Manager Lesley Woodcraft said: "Choosing a winner from so many fabulous photos was difficult, however we felt Stephen and Jo's eye-catching entry really showed off the balustrading to great effect."

Measuring nearly 20 metres long by up to two metres wide, the balcony spans the sea-facing elevation of the property and is accessed off the first-floor living room and open-plan kitchen. Featuring curves at both ends and an anodised satin finish handrail, it provides far-reaching panoramic views to England's south coast.

"The balcony is a crowning feature of the house and really transforms its whole appearance. We're absolutely delighted with it, and of course, that it has also won us such a marvellous prize in Balcony's photo competition," said Stephen.

"We saw Balcony Systems three years ago at Grand Designs and were very impressed as the product was exactly what we were looking for - nice clean lines and clear glass without clips to keep the views.

"No one else was prepared to do a curve; there was a very 'can-do' positive attitude from Balcony! They can always find a solution. The fitting team was brilliant, really excellent. So many people have admired our balcony from which we enjoy wonderful sea views."

Completing the three-bedroom property last summer was the fulfilment of a 38-year dream for the couple, who have four grown-up children. "Having owned the plot of land for so long, we took the decision five years ago to finally go ahead and build our own house," continued Stephen, who admitted the project was a major undertaking at their time of life.

"The house took two years to build and the glass balcony was installed right at the end of the build. It really makes a feature of the whole house, while also protecting us - and the building - from the wind. Not only does it look good, but the low-maintenance glass and aluminium materials resist corrosion - an important factor for a coastal location," he added.  The balustrade was fitted atop the galvanised steel structure, which features recycled plastic wood-effect decking with a non-slip surface.

Architect Robert Biggs of Biggs Talbot Architects, said: "It was important for the design of the balcony structure to reflect the contemporary nature of the house design as well as providing a marine theme.

"The Balcony system with its clean minimal structure lines and ability to provide curves provided an ideal solution both in terms of providing an interesting visual appearance and low maintenance."

Two 7.38 metre glass and aluminium balconies supplied by Balcony Systems enhance spectacular views overlooking Warfleet Creek and beautiful countryside in Dartmouth.

Paul and Brenda Reach replaced a timber balcony with Balcony Systems' low-maintenance balustrading, adding a second one above off a new open-plan 24 foot square reception area.

Says Paul: "We got such a good deal from Balcony Systems that we did both to match! We wanted a toughened glass balcony and easily obtained an immediate online quote from their website. It worked for us!

Balcony Systems' self-cleaning glass balustrade keeps canal views

When a Cheshire householder added a wraparound terrace to her canalside home, she turned to Balcony Systems for the low-maintenance 39-metre curved and straight glass balustrading solution to keep the views.

A key factor in Lynda Hadfield's choice was Balcony's innovative self-cleaning glass coating, which creates a smooth surface that quickly repels water, dirt and grime to keep the glass cleaner for longer. This double-sided coating reduces cleaning and does not require harsh chemicals to do the job effectively.

Balcony Systems supplied 26 metres of straight glass and aluminium balustrading, plus nine metres of curved panels, with the shiny Royal Chrome handrail finish replicating the look of stainless steel. "It really does work; I simply hose it down regularly and any dirt just washes off the glass and greatly reduces maintenance. Clear glass was important for me, as I wanted to retain views of the narrowboats on the Cheshire Ring canal system from the terrace. The balustrading looks excellent and I am very pleased with it," she added.

Overlooking the sea at Mawgan Porth in North Cornwall, this stylish irregular-shaped balcony from Balcony Systems incorporates the company's unique self-cleaning glass coating to resist the worst of the Atlantic Ocean winter weather.

Mark, who also assisted with the concept design of the dwelling, commented: "The balcony arrangement was complex due to its irregular geometric shape. However, the resultant installation through design development with Balcony Systems was spot on. The end result has been well received and is elegant."

VBS provided technical expertise at all stages of the project, from initial design concepts right through to overseeing installation of nearly 1,400 metres of straight and curved glass balconies.

Sweeping curved glass balconies follow the building's rounded lines on the larger apartments, allowing for unobstructed views across the landscaped grounds and enhancing light through the full height windows.

The system's versatility allowed for specialist adaptation to suit the fixings and edge installation. Waterproofing was also taken into account with the balcony installation interfacing with the cladding system.

The system is suitable for all types of applications, being compatible with timber, steel, stone, brick and concrete walls. As the toughened glass panels are held securely at the base and handrail, there are no clamps, clips or 'lugs' to spoil the clean lines.

According to a Clegg Construction spokesman, the two companies jointly developed the overall balcony design to achieve the desired bold design statement - and the clear glass balconies played a major part in that process.

"The main considerations were maximum glass and minimum uprights to keep the river views. Achieving smooth curves without the need for a faceted construction and the expanse of glass gives a 'Mediterranean' feel to the whole development, which works really well," he added.

In recent years, the Trent Park development has won a series of high-profile industry awards. Following accolades from the Daily Mail Awards for Best Architecture, Best Development and Best Apartment, River Crescent gained further national recognition by winning the Your New Home/Daily Telegraph Award for Best Waterside Development.

River Crescent was the first phase of the Nottingham Waterside Regeneration Plan aimed at developing the River Trent from Colwick Country Park to Trent Bridge.
