Banstead, Surrey

Contractor: David Rose Construction

Two impressive glass elevations form the main focal point of the design to an extension at Weston Acres, a retired seafarers’ care home near Banstead in the Surrey countryside.

Balcony Systems supplied more than 30 metres of curved windows and sliding curved doors to create a unique statement in the vaulted Day Room at the Royal Alfred Seafarers' Society flagship nursing home, residential care and housing centre.

Known as the ‘150th Anniversary Project’ celebrating 150 years of providing care to former mariners, the national maritime charity’s new extension and refurbished facilities were officially opened by their royal Patron, HRH the Princess Royal in July 2015.

The extension and alterations were carried out by Woking-based David Rose Construction, a family-managed construction company.

“The curved glass fitted perfectly into the original design specification and is the main focal part of the design,” said one of the Partners, Tom Rose. “Everything revolved around the fact that curved windows were going in. The curved steel beams were specially-made and the curved glass really makes the final finished article stand out as something unique and extraordinary.”

Tom was put in touch with Balcony Systems by Edmund Williams Architects, the project architects. He explained that although quotes were obtained from other suppliers, these were discounted as some couldn’t carry out curved works and others worked out slightly more expensive.

“On the basis that Balcony Systems had prepared the quote to the architects’ specification and were able to hold their quotation value or improve on it to secure the order, we went ahead.”

The project progressed smoothly and Tom was impressed with the quality and ‘reasonable cost’ of Balcony’s specialist products. He further praised the company’s good customer service and back-up, which helped to swiftly overcome some specific challenges on site.

Commenting on the ‘fantastic end result’, he added: “The products simply make the whole project stand out, creating the look of a very high quality project to high architectural standards: the curved windows and doors really create an image of great design and build.

“Overall, thanks very much for a brilliant product which really adds an exceptional appearance to the project. It looks amazing and the client loves it! We look forward to working with Balcony Systems again.”
