Orbit Glass Privacy Screen System

Tech Specs  |  Installation  |  Gallery  |  Projects  |  Reviews

Privacy screens are many times a stipulation to a planning approval for a balcony, usually to limit views onto a neighbouring property that may now be overlooked by the new addition or balcony. Integrating a privacy screen with a standard height balustrade requires attention to several details, not least being the added loads of the higher screen.

Here at Balcony Systems we manufacture and supply bespoke privacy screens. We have added these to our range of products and have developed a system that integrates with our standard balustrade system and meets the required wind loads and building regulations.

The privacy screens are available in both Royal Chrome and Silver Anodised Aluminium finishes and are supplied with 10mm sanitized, toughened glass which is used instead of regular clear or tinted glass.

It is important to think of the implications of a privacy screen in advance so that any pre installation of posts can be taken into account. Get us involved early in the design considerations so that we can help advise and consult the best options to achieve this.

Parameters that limit and how to design your 1.8m screen

Considerations

The subject of privacy screens and their height requires extra consideration for wind loadings and the subject of wind loading is not a simple calculation as there are many variables that need to be considered.

The loads on privacy screens are A LOT larger than on balcony rails and will require stronger posts with bigger base plates.

When calculating such structures the loads for screens that are more than 5.4m long are increased by another 30% and so we have limited the 1.8m high screens here up to a maximum width of 5.4m long.

The variables are quite large and in order to put some sort of order into this and determine what can and cannot be done, we decided to divide the options into three possible distances between posts and base on this we commissioned our structural engineers to do some calculations - There are three calculations here, each the same in essence but with the distance of the centre of posts changing.

System additions

In order that the 1.8m screen to be able to withstand and conform to the loading required, we have added the below elements to our Balcony 1 system:

  • We have created a new base post with a large base plate and 60 X 60 X 5 SHS (square hollow section) with a 20mm thick base plate 300mm X 225mm
  • We have created a new Aluminium sleeve post which is 72 X 72mm
  • A new cap for the posts
  • Glass on screens must be fixed on all 4 sides so we must run a bottom rail on the VERTICAL posts as well
  • Screens are max of 1.8m high
  • The handrail will be fixed between the posts

What you need to know

When dealing with a site we need to ascertain the following parameters and then decide which calculation will suit that site. If the parameters are OUTSIDE of these calculations then a site specific calculation will need to be made and possibly our system will not be able to suit. SCREENS WHICH ARE OUTSIDE OF THESE PARAMETERS ARE EXCLUDED FROM THIS INFORMATION.

Things to Ascertain

  • The area the job is in in terms of basic wind speed. On each calculation there is a map of the UK with basic wind speeds.
  • Altitude of site
  • Effective height of the building
  • Distance of the site from the sea

It is essential to read the reports IN DETAIL FIRST but the main differences and parameter variation of the three calculations are:

For post spacing of 1.5m

For sites at an altitude of 50 metres or less above sea level within the 23 m/sec basic wind speed area, examples of the different types of terrain and height of buildings for which this system is suitable are as follows:

  • Any coastal, country, or town location where the effective building height is 9 metres or less.
  • Sites in town or country areas 10 km or more from the sea where the effective building height is 12 metres or less.
  • Town sites 100 km or more from the sea, with an effective building height of 19m or less.

For post spacing of 1.2m

For sites at an altitude of 100 metres or less above sea level within the 25 m/sec basic wind speed area, examples of the different types of terrain and height of buildings for which this system is suitable are as follows:

  • Any coastal, country, or town location where the effective building height is 7 metres or less.
  • Sites in town or country areas 10 km or more from the sea where the effective building height is 8 metres or less.
  • Town sites 100 km or more from the sea, with an effective building height of 14m or less.

For post spacing of 1.0m

For sites at an altitude of 100 metres or less above sea level within the 25 m/sec basic wind speed area, examples of the different types of terrain and height of buildings for which this system is suitable are as follows:

  • Any coastal, country, or town location where the effective building height is 19 metres or less.
  • Sites in town or country areas 10 km or more from the sea where the effective building height is 20 metres or less.
  • Town sites 100 km or more from the sea, with an effective building height of 30m or less.

The above is the simplest way we have been able to summarize and deal with the subject of 1.8m high screens, it is rather simple once you get the parameters.

Privacy Screen and 1.8m High Panels

The added height that privacy screens must usually have requires extra consideration for wind loadings. It may seem initially that it is a small difference to go from 1.1m to 1.8m and in straightforward thinking terms you would initially think that is an increase of 63% of the load.

You would be wrong, the increase under severe calculations reaches up to 4 times the load that a 1.1m screen must endure, And so these deigns are not to be taken lightly, the last thing you want is a large sheet of glass flying off your balcony in a storm.

Balcony Bulastrades and Glass Privacy Screens

Many balcony requirements, go through the planning permission process and when the balcony is thought to overlook into or onto a neighbouring property a requirement is put forward for a "privacy screen". By privacy screens we refer to a taller than usual balustrade element that not clear or see through.

The balcony will have a balustrade to prevent a fall; this is occasionally made using our glass balcony system. What happens when the glass balustrade now needs to have an end screen, or privacy screen?
