A glass balcony was an important part of the design for a Hampshire couple’s home extension to add extra outdoor space in which to relax and enjoy countryside views. And this smart Balconette balustrade fitted the bill perfectly.

The extension has added a further bedroom, plus a utility room, shower and an office to Chris and Christine Burrows’ property in Alton. Leading off the new bedroom, the balcony uses Balconette’s Aerofoil System with a Royal Chrome Anodised handrail offering a comfortable profile to lean on while contemplating peaceful rural views.

“It’s nice to have this outside space because you can sit outside with a mug of tea and read the paper,” says Chris. “If we have some warm days in the winter, Christine will be out there with her book.”

In addition to Balconette, Chris approached a couple of other companies for balcony quotes but was ‘disappointed when they didn’t bother to reply’. On why he chose Balconette, he continues: “Balconette responded to my request for a costing, so that was great. I also liked the fact that some of their balustrades didn’t need posts. At 4.11-metres, our balustrade was just a bit too wide to have no posts at all, which is why we needed the one post in the middle.”

When fixed to a wall at both ends, the Balconette Aerofoil System can create a glass balustrade up to four metres in length, on any single balustrade run, without the need for supporting posts.

Chris used his consultant engineer expertise to measure up for the balustrade, saying: “I knew what was required and that the fixings had to screw into brick, rather than a cavity wall, for support. I asked the customer care team pertinent questions, and they were very willing and able to help me. One of Balconette’s installation partners, Tim Green of Expect Home Solutions Ltd fitted the balustrade in a day and he was very good.”

Despite some structural issues with headroom and the size of supporting beams, which were successfully overcome by Chris and Tim, the project was completed successfully. Chris adds: “I like the appearance of the balcony, and it’s all absolutely hunky-dory!”
