Do you overlook a busy street? Or do you have nosy neighbours? Or is there an overfriendly dog walker who just keeps peering into your property? If you answered Yes to any of those scenarios, then perhaps you should consider getting your balcony or balustrade installed with obscure glass.

There are no two ways about it; your privacy is important. Creating privacy needn’t be harsh or unattractive, obscure glass can be a stylish feature in your balustrading that can transform a space - it even allows abundant light to filter through it. So, whether you want to sip your morning coffee in peace, or entertain family and friends without being observed, our obscure glass can help you. Read on to discover five ways you can benefit from installing obscure glass.

1. Promotes Privacy

One of the chief purposes of obscure glass is to ensure privacy. Obscure glass is designed to distort and blur shapes and figures behind the other side of the glass, protecting you and your garden activities from prying eyes. We have two obscure glass options to choose from - Satin Glass and Laminated Glass with Opaque Interlayer.

Choosing to incorporate obscure glass into your design provides you with expansive options. For instance, you have the flexibility of using obscure glass for only part of your balcony balustrading, multiple sections, or for the entirety of your balustrading. Commonly, our customers use obscure glass in areas where their decking or garden are overlooked whilst the remainder of their balustrading is installed with standard transparent glass, which provides a satisfying balance between privacy and enjoyment of your view beyond.

2. Allows in Sunlight

Your privacy need not come at the cost of lighting. With obscure glass, you can still get an abundance of natural light passing through the glass panel whilst simultaneously maintaining your much-needed privacy. Not only that, but our Laminated Glass with Opaque Interlayer filters the Sun’s damaging UV rays and helps protect your furnishings from fading over time.

3. Easy to Maintain

Satin Glass is easy to maintain and has a long-lasting performance because of its smooth, durable surface. There is no need to use harsh cleaning chemicals to clean the glass (really, don’t use them as it could corrode the satin surface!) all that is needed to take good care of your glass is a regular wipe down with warm water.

To further enhance the cleanliness of the glass, our own BalcoNano® self-cleaning solution can be applied to the glass which forms a hard, water-repellent surface that protects the glass from lodging dirt, grime, and other deposits. The self-cleaning solution can be applied by our Balconette professionals when they manufacture your product, or you can apply the BalcoNano® at home with our self-application sachets. After the coating is applied, little intervention is needed to keep your glass in pristine condition – a quick wipe down with a damp cloth will do the trick!

4. Enhances Security

The most obvious security advantage is that obscure glass blurs the view beyond the other side of the glass and therefore conceals any valuables that you might have accidentally left lying around, leaving zero temptation for snooping onlookers.

The less obvious security feature is the impressive durability and robustness of our obscure glass. Our Laminated Glass with Opaque Interlayer consists of two pieces of toughened glass that are held together by an extremely tough PVB plastic interlayer. Our toughened glass has been tempered and reinforced to approximately four times stronger than regular float glass and when combined with a PVB interlayer, it creates a glass panel that can withstand considerable impacts and forces. In the unlikely situation it does endure a direct impact, the Laminated Glass will keep its integrity and the glass will remain adhered to the interlayer which reduces the risk of injury.

5. Stylish

Obscure glass adds a touch of elegance and style to any home. Obscure glass is wonderfully versatile and can be moulded into various shapes and sizes and is easily customised to your specific requirements. Beyond its functional benefits, obscure glass adds a strong decorative element to your living area and is a unique addition to your balcony or balustrading.

We have two different obscure glass styles available to suit your unique taste and boost your home’s kerb appeal. Our Satin Glass option has a silky finish that makes for a sleek aesthetic whilst our second option Laminated Glass has a pearl sheen that will enhance any home’s façade.
