Fitting exactly on the site of a former croquet lawn, the outdoor space of this contemporary new home in Somerset is enhanced by an impressive 20-metre-long curved and straight glass balustrade supplied by Balconette.

The homeowner had downsized from his Georgian house, near Glastonbury, and the single-storey dwelling was built in its grounds by a local building company, GDW Building and Renovations Ltd.

GDW Director David Williams says the client was keen on a glass balustrade to keep the light and views over the garden and woodland beyond. It took his team around a week to install Balconette’s SG12 Fully Frameless System, with the system’s base track fitted below floor level, creating an aesthetic floating glass effect.

The curved section of the balustrade measures nearly 12 metres and the client specified Balconette’s elliptical handrail in the striking Royal Chrome anodised finish.

Commenting on the use of a handrail with a frameless glass balustrade system, David explains: “The client was keen on having a handrail because it gave a sense of safety. The system is designed to be safe without a handrail, but he just felt more comfortable having a handrail and to aid walking.”

He adds: “It was the first time I’d installed Balconette’s product and found it very easy to fit. The instructions were very easy to follow. The balustrade looks fantastic, and the client is very pleased; it fulfilled what he had in mind.”

For architect Roger Gallannaugh, it was his client who introduced him to Balconette’s balustrading system, saying: “He had seen it in an advertisement and said that’s the sort of thing he’d like. So, we took it from there. The glass balustrade was something he was anxious to have. It was an important part of his building and we worked with Balconette’s technical team on the design.”

The installation was completed in sections, as Roger explains: “We were able to do 95% in one go, then the last bit had to be measured on site to tie in with the final dimensions.”

On the final result, Roger concludes: “The balustrades really enhance the property and provide a transparent view of the beautiful garden from both the balcony and the sitting room all year round.”
